Activity 8 Positional Words and Direction

Use a container or a small box and some of the props from the story to discuss positions as seen in the picture to the right. Is that caterpillar over or under the apple? Is the caterpillar beside or on the chair?

Once the child gets the concept, use other items around the house. The activity can be done with the child and a sturdy chair.  For example stand near the chair, beside the chair, behind the chair, far from the chair.  Sit on the chair etc. A cardboard box or study plastic box will also make this a fun, enjoyable activity.

For older children, the activity can be combined with two part commands. Example, take two steps forward and step over. Take three steps back and walk behind.
