Activity 1

Before reading the story you may want to ask the child if he/she knows the story. If your child knows the story engage in a little discussion about the story to find out how much the child knows.

Start the story by the telling the child the title and the name of the author. Read the story to your child once or twice if you have to.

Engage in conversation about the story. With the story still within the child’s view, engage in conversation and ask questions about the story.  Sample questions are on the right.

Ask the child what they like about the story and what they did not like.  Over the next few days, you will engage in discussions and ask the child questions that pertain to the story. It is not a test so allow the child to view the story so he/she can discuss and answer questions. Ask only a handful of questions each time. Sample questions include

Which day of the week the caterpillar did not eat?

What is the story about?

Ask the child to identify the character (s) in the story

What happened at the beginning of the story?

What happened in the middle of the story?

What happened at the end of the story?

What did the caterpillar eat on specific days?
